What is All-on-4?Read Transcript
The All-on-4 is actually, more or less, a name—a branding for a procedure that involves—generally it involves people that come in to an appointment, everything is already planned, but they will present for one day. They'll have their teeth removed, implants placed, and then at the end of the day, they go home with a full set of naturally functioning teeth. In the upper jaw, it generally involves more than four implants. It can be as little as four. Again, that's going to be determined by the density and the strength of the bone, so when we place the implants, we measure the tightness of the implants themselves. We typically would place five or six implants in the upper jaw, and it works out really well. The morning is the first appointment where the teeth are removed and the implants are placed. Then we spend a couple of hours after that to get their prothesis ready, and then by early afternoon, they're able to go home wearing their teeth. They're really quite amazed at that.
In the past, the only way to replace a whole arch of teeth was to do one of two things. First, you could settle for removable dentures that would likely become loose, would move around, and made you deal with messy denture adhesives. The second option was to get dental implants, but you needed to get a single implant for each tooth you wanted to replace. (That would be 32 separate implants in your jaw to replace a full mouth’s worth of teeth!) That meant a lot of surgery, a greater likelihood of pain, and a lot of recovery time for a person to go through.
Lucky for us that we don’t live in the past. Today, we have the option of All-on-4. All-on-4 is a dental technique that uses only four dental implants to secure a complete smile restoration. This gives you a full arch of replacement teeth. You get the stability and bone protection of dental implants, but you don’t have to fill your whole jawline to reap these benefits.
What makes All-on-4 special?
Better Quality of Life – All-on-4 is able to immediately improve the way you are living. You go from no teeth to a full mouth of teeth in a very short amount of time. You will be able to eat what you want to eat, smile when you want to smile, and speak confidently knowing that your tooth replacement option is not going to go anywhere while you do.
Treatment Time – With the All-on-4 method, you have four implants placed along the arch, but the two in the back are placed at an angle. This way, the implants are able to take advantage of denser bone than if they were simply placed in a traditional fashion. This leads to a reduced amount of time to complete the All-on-4 procedure. It also means that you might be able to avoid bone grafts to build up insufficient bone structure.
Amazing Stability – Stability is the hallmark of dental implant treatments, but All-on-4 is able to provide that for a whole row of teeth with only four implants anchoring them. The tilting of the back implants makes it possible for Dr. Wilhelm to engage higher quality bone, which leads to a better bond between the implant and the bone.
What is the All-on-4 process?
First, you will have a consultation with Dr. Wilhelm. Together, you will work out what treatment will work best for you. If All-on-4 dental implants is a good choice for you, Dr. Wilhelm will take dental X-rays and impressions and use these to make your custom restoration. You will also schedule a time to come in and get your All-on-4 procedure completed. On the day of your procedure, Dr. Wilhelm will place the four implants in each jaw and attach your restoration. You will walk in with a damaged smile and leave with one that is brand new.
