What is oral surgery?
Oral surgery involves some of the most invasive dental procedures. This doesn’t mean they are the most painful, just the most involved. For many of the treatments under this umbrella, you will be under oral conscious or IV sedation. Some examples our surgical procedures are teeth extractions, ridge augmentations, bone grafts, sinus lifts, and gum grafts. These procedures are meant to correct an issue and in some cases, prepare you for the next.
Does Dr. Wilhelm do tooth extractions?
Dr. Wilhelm does do teeth extractions. This means that he will remove any tooth that needs to be taken out. He will first apply a local anesthetic, and if you need to be even more relaxed, he can offer sedation options as well. Dr. Wilhelm will make sure that you are comfortable and pain-free during your treatment.
What is a ridge augmentation?
When you have a deformity in your jaw, a ridge augmentation may be used to correct it. This deformity can be caused by injury, accident, genetics, or missing teeth. Dr. Wilhelm will expose the deformity in your jaw and fill the area with bone or bone-like substance. This will promote new bone growth in the area. One reason this might be done is to accommodate the placement of dental implants, which require a healthy amount of bone.
What happens during a sinus lift?
When you have low bone mass in your upper jaw, a sinus lift may be used to increase that mass. Dr. Wilhelm will make a small opening in your bone in order to move your sinus membrane up into your sinus cavity. The void that is left from that move is filled with bone or a bone substitute to prompt new bone growth in the area. This technique is also used to prepare an area of the jaw for placement of dental implants.
What do gum grafts help treat?
Gum grafts are used to treat gum recession, where the gum growth in an area of your mouth has lessened, stopped, or receded. Gum recession is a danger to your teeth, as the more the gums recede, the weaker the support for your teeth gets. This could lead to tooth loss. Gum disease is a big contributor to gum recession, as is any form of tobacco use. If you have gum recession, you need to call Dr. Wilhelm and see if a gum graft is the right choice for you.
What is the benefit of a bone graft?
A bone graft will build up the bone mass where it is lacking in your jaw. This is helpful for patients who have lost bone due to missing teeth or from wearing dentures. Bone grafts can correct deformities or rebuild the bone structure to make dental implant placement possible. Talk to Dr. Wilhelm today to see if this treatment can help you.
