Dental Sedation Could Help Your Smile

Going to the dentist can cause mixed emotions in a lot of people.

Most people realize their oral health is important, and visits to a dentist’s office will help them keep their mouths healthy. And yet, dental anxiety or fear of the dentist makes it hard to make an appointment, much less to sit in a dentist chair.

Mark W. Wilhelm, DMD, MSD, wants to help you get the care that you need to restore your smile and the make it easier for you to receive the treatment.

If you live in or near Woodbury, MN, please contact our office to learn more about our dental sedation options and restorative dentistry.

What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Believe it or not, sedation dentistry actually goes back more than 150 years. Back then, dentists and other medical professionals have discovered the benefits of nitrous oxide (laughing gas) for pain relief.

At our practice, we frequently use oral sedation to help patients who are fearful or anxious about their dental care.

Oral sedation is easy to take, and it makes dental care easier for you and for the dental professionals who are helping you. With oral sedation, you take a pill before your procedure begins.

We also offer IV sedation as well. This is stronger than oral conscious sedation, but it offers all the same benefits for you, our patients.

By the time your treatment starts, you will be in a highly relaxed state. You won’t completely asleep, but you may not remember much of your treatment if you remember anything at all.

This will allow us to restore your smile, your bite, or both without you feeling any anxiety or fear about what is happening.

Please keep in mind that you must make arrangements for someone you trust to drive you home after your treatment. The effects of sedation may take a few hours to wear off, and you will want to rest for some time after you get home.

If you have questions about our dental sedation options, please call our dentist office in Woodbury, MN.

How Common Is Dental Anxiety?

It’s more common than you may realize.

Peter Milgrom, DDS, who is the director of the Dental Fears Research Clinic at the University of Washington, estimates that as many as 1 in 5 people will go to the dentist only when it’s absolutely necessary.

And yet, experts estimate that between 5 and 8 percent of American avoid the dental because of fear or anxiety even when professional dental care is the only way to treat a problem.

Sedation can and has helped millions of people across the country manage their anxiety so they can receive the dental help that they need. At the office Mark W. Wilhelm, DMD, MSD, we see patients almost every day who have some level of dental anxiety.

And we are glad that our sedation options allow them to receive the oral care they need and deserve.

Let Us Help You Keep Smiling

Dr. Wilhelm is a graduate of the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, and he has a certificate in Prosthodontics and Maxillofacial Prosthetics from Indiana University.

As a prosthodontist, his focus is on restoring your healthy mouth.

You can probably imagine there are countless reasons that people may need restorative dentistry.

Whenever possible, we want to save your tooth or teeth. When that’s not possible, our goal is to provide you the most natural looking and functioning teeth replacements possible. In modern dentistry, we have more options than ever to make that happen.

A dental crown is a versatile treatment that can be used to repair teeth that have been damaged by tooth decay or to restore teeth that are chipped, broken, or worn down from habitual behaviors.

A crown also can be combined with a dental implant to replace a missing or lost tooth. Dental implants replace the roots of your lost teeth and add stability to dental crowns and other teeth replacements.

A patient who is missing multiple teeth may need a dental bridge (which is made by bonding two or more crowns together). Dentures can replace an entire row of missing teeth. Both bridges and dentures can be supported by dental implants as well.
