Should You Consider Tooth Contouring?

Are you unhappy with the shape of your teeth? Why go another day embarrassed by your smile? At the office of Dr. Mark Wilhelm, we can help! We offer tooth contouring: a simple and painless procedure that can dramatically improve the look of your smile.

What Is Tooth Contouring?

Tooth contouring, also known as odontoplasty, enameloplasty, slenderizing, or stripping, is a procedure where we remove small amounts of your tooth enamel to change the tooth’s shape, length, or surface. Most often we use tooth contouring to improve the look of your smile.

Misshapen teeth can have a lasting effect on your self-confidence. Why continue to live with a smile you’re embarrassed to show when you can fix your teeth and finally have a smile you can show off with confidence?

Contouring is a very conservative procedure. It’s painless and takes no time at all. You can see the fantastic results right away!

Is Tooth Contouring Right For Me?

Tooth contouring might be a great option for you if you want to:

  • Repair small chips in your teeth
  • Smooth out bumps or pits in your tooth’s enamel
  • Fix irregular tooth shapes
  • Adjust the length of your canines

We typically don’t recommend tooth contouring if you have severely chipped or fractured teeth. Tooth contouring doesn’t work in the same way that veneers or bonding would. However, contouring is often used together with these treatments.

The only way you can find out for sure if tooth contouring will work for you is to visit our office for a consultation. During your consultation, we will take a close look at your teeth and discuss the issues you’re having with your teeth. That way we can come up with a treatment plan that’s just right for you.

Tooth Contouring Procedure: What To Expect

As we mentioned above, the entire process starts with an initial exam to make sure you’re a good candidate for tooth contouring. If necessary, we will take an X-ray of your teeth to get a better look at the size and location of your tooth’s pulp. The pulp is the middle of your tooth where the nerves and blood vessels are. If your enamel is too thin or if the pulp is too close to the surface of your tooth, contouring may not be possible. But rest assured you can likely still benefit from another procedure like bonding or veneers.

The Procedure

During your appointment, we will remove small amounts of the tooth enamel. We will remove a certain amount of enamel to make sure the tooth blends in with the rest of your smile and looks natural. Depending on how much contouring is needed and how many teeth we’re working on, we might be able to complete the process in a single appointment.

When your teeth are shaped, we’ll finish the process by polishing the reshaped teeth. The procedure is entirely painless and no anesthetic is needed because we make sure to avoid the nerves inside your teeth.

Follow-Up

If you only undergo a contouring procedure and don’t combine the treatment with another cosmetic procedure, no follow-up is needed. There is also no special care required for your teeth. Just continue to brush and floss as you normally do to protect your teeth and gums and promote good oral health.

The Benefits Of Tooth Contouring

Undoubtedly, the biggest benefit of tooth contouring is the dramatic improvement in your self-confidence. You’ll be able to leave our office with a smile you love and teeth you’ll be proud to show off.

By smoothing out crevices or correcting overlapped teeth where plaque or tartar can build up, you can see an improvement in your overall oral health.

Tooth contouring may also correct minor problems with your bite if you were experiencing minor problems because of the size of your teeth.
